048. Read 34 new books - Henriquetta's Treasure

Quidnovi

Henriquetta's Treasure by Eileen Ramsay

Alex Frobisher goes to dinner, reluctantly, with her new neighbours.  Her hostess, Lucy Andrews, shows her an amateurish painting, Henriqueta's Treasure, a music case that contains yellowed newspaper cuttings, some letters and sketches and a few small personal belongings.  Do these items hold the answers to Lucy's questions? Who was her grandfather, who killed two good men in Lisbon in 1942, and where is a priceless impressionist painting - if it ever existed?  It is the beginning of an adventure that will take Alex from St Andrews to Paris, to Vienna, and to the Hawaiian Islands and eventually to a convent in Lisbon. On the way she will meet grave danger but by discovering the tragic truth of Henriqueta's Treasure, she will find, not only the answers to the questions, but also love.

The book attracted because the title, in Portuguese, mentions Lisbon, although the writer has anything to do with Portugal.

I never thought it would be an interesting romance that mixes the actual time with Lisbon from the WWII. From the social differences between "rich" and "poor", to the atrocities that happened back then, passing through the personal problems of Claire Radclif, Lucy's grandmother, the chapters that happened in the 40's were my favourite.

Better than those, just the mention to Pastéis de Belém!
